How Do You Know If You Are Experiencing a Dental Emergency?

If you are not sure whether you’re experiencing a dental emergency, consider the following questions. Do you have severe tooth pain? Is there swelling in your mouth, jaw, or facial area? Are one or more of your teeth loose? Have you suffered trauma to your face or mouth? Are you bleeding from the mouth? If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions, the chances are, you need emergency dental care and should contact us immediately for further instructions.

Common Dental Emergencies:

Tooth Pain: A persistent toothache is considered a dental emergency, and may indicate an infection or an abscessed tooth. Call us for an emergency appointment immediately. In the meantime, rinse your mouth with warm water and floss your teeth to remove any lodged food. If you see any swelling, a cold compress can help. Avoid placing aspirin or painkillers on the area.

Knocked Out Tooth: If you've experienced a blow to your face that knocked out a tooth, contact us immediately for urgent dental care. Rinse your tooth carefully without touching the roots, and keep it in your mouth next to your gums or in milk until you get to us. Our emergency dentist will do everything possible to save your tooth.

Broken Tooth: A broken tooth can cause considerable pain and will require immediate attention. Contact us as soon as possible, and we will do everything we can to treat and save your tooth.

Other conditions that may require emergency dental treatment include a loose tooth, a chipped tooth, injury to your soft tissue including the tongue, cheeks or gums, or a lost filling or crown. If you suspect that your condition requires immediate care, call us right away.

What Should You Expect?

When you come in to see us, we will work tirelessly to alleviate your pain and to save your teeth. We will take x-rays to assess your condition. We will perform any needed treatment or dental surgery to address your emergency to avoid tooth loss or extraction. At Creve Coeur Advanced Dentistry, we will do everything in our power to keep you comfortable and to ensure the best outcomes.

Preventing Dental Emergencies

While it’s not possible that you will completely eliminate the risk of dental emergencies, you can protect your mouth with some precautions. Use a mouthguard when participating in sports activities to protect your teeth from impact resulting in trauma. Avoid biting down on hard foods, ice, and candies, and refrain from using your teeth as tools or bottle openers. Brush and floss daily and get your regular checkups to keep your teeth free of disease and to prevent dental emergencies from developing.
