Tooth-Colored Fillings
Have you been told you have a cavity that will need a filling? You are not alone. Most people will need a dental filling at one point in time. The good news is that cosmetic dentistry offers tooth-colored fillings that will restore the function of your teeth, and leave you with incredibly natural-looking results!
What Are Dental Fillings?
Tooth fillings involve the use of filling materials to repair cavities and restore the function of teeth. Tooth decay left untreated can result in enamel deterioration, tooth sensitivity, and further tooth damage, meaning that you may eventually need involved treatments such as root canal therapy. In some cases, dental decay damages teeth to the extent that they can’t be saved and may require extraction.
Tooth-Colored Fillings Overview
Tooth-colored fillings, also known as cosmetic fillings, are made of composite resin and closely match to your natural tooth color and appearance. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), composites offer excellent durability and resistance to fracture in small to mid-sized restorations under moderate chewing pressure. They bond to your tooth structure restoring 85 to 95 percent of your tooth’s strength.
Tooth colored-fillings offer a cosmetic choice for use on front teeth. In addition to restoring decayed or damaged teeth, your restorations can be used to change their size, color or shape. They are also commonly used to repair cracked or broken teeth, or teeth worn from teeth grinding (bruxism) or habits such as nail-biting. Your tooth-colored fillings will restore the form, function, aesthetics, and health or a damaged tooth. Composite fillings are commonly used to replace existing silver amalgam fillings, leaving you with a natural-looking smile.
What Is the Procedure?
We will start by numbing your mouth using a local anesthetic for your comfort. We will remove any tooth decay and clean the area, and then will place the filling material in the cavity. We will shape it to resemble your natural tooth, and then will use a curing light to harden the filling material. We will make any adjustments needed, and the final step is polishing your new filling. You will love the natural look and feel of your restored tooth.
Caring for Your New Fillings
Teeth with fillings need the same care required to keep your natural teeth clean and healthy. Brushing carefully at least twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and rinsing with antibacterial mouthwash will help keep your restorations in tip-top shape.
Make sure to consume a balanced diet, and steer away from sugary foods or carbonated drinks. Avoid using your teeth as tools or bottle openers so that you do not damage your fillings or your natural teeth. If you grind your teeth during your asleep, talk to us about custom-made mouthguards to protect your teeth from wear or damage.
It's vital that you keep your with your dental visits and cleanings every six months to allow us to check your restorations and ensure they are in great shape. With proper care, your tooth-colored fillings can last for many years!
